Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and are already taking part in either the STAR or EYEMARKER research studies
- Your personal risk score for eye disease (measured using an app called RetinaRisk®) is 3% or higher
- You are 50 years old or older
- Your body weight is in the overweight or obese range (BMI of 25 or above)
- Your long-term blood sugar control reading (called HbA1c) is 6.5% or higher
- You have high blood pressure, with readings at or above 139/89
- You have mild to moderate early-stage diabetic eye disease, with certain visible changes seen in your retina (such as small blood vessel bulges, bleeding spots, or fatty deposits)
- You are able to understand the information given about the study and are willing to sign a consent form
- You are willing and able to follow the study requirements throughout the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- You have type 1 diabetes (rather than type 2)
- Your diabetic eye disease has reached a more advanced early stage (called "moderately severe")
- You have diabetic swelling in the central part of your retina, or a more advanced form of diabetic eye disease involving new blood vessel growth
- You have any other disease affecting the blood vessels in your retina that is not related to diabetes
