Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have agreed to take part by signing a consent form
  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You have one or more spots or lumps in your lung that have been confirmed as cancer, or are strongly suspected to be cancer, and a team of specialist doctors has agreed you are suitable for a bronchoscopic microwave ablation procedure (a treatment delivered through a thin tube passed into the airways)
  • Your lung lesion(s) cannot be safely removed by surgery for medical reasons, or you have chosen not to have surgery or other treatments, and the lesion(s) are no larger than 20mm
  • You are able to have a bronchoscopy (a procedure using a thin tube passed into your airways) under general anaesthetic
  • You are willing and able to follow the requirements of the study
  • Your overall health has been assessed as suitable enough for general anaesthetic (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your lung lesion is too close (within 10mm) to important structures such as your windpipe, main airways, aorta, major blood vessels, heart, food pipe, spinal cord, or certain nerves (this applies to procedures using robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, and is specific to UK sites)
  • Your lung lesion is located in a central area of the chest near major airways, blood vessels, heart, food pipe, spinal cord, or certain nerves — or it is less than 10mm from the lining of your lung (this applies to procedures done without robotic assistance)
  • Your general health and ability to carry out daily activities has been rated as very poor using a standard medical scale (ECOG status 4) (confirm with trial site)
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have taken part in another clinical trial involving a drug or medical device within the last 30 days that could interfere with this study
  • You are already scheduled for another procedure to treat the same lung lesion at the same time
  • You have a physical or mental health condition that could affect your ability to take part or could put your safety at risk
  • Your life expectancy is less than 6 months
  • You have a condition that affects your blood's ability to clot, or your platelet count (blood cells that help clotting) is too low
  • You have an implanted medical device, such as a pacemaker or other electronic implant
  • You have been diagnosed with high blood pressure in the arteries of your lungs (pulmonary hypertension) above a certain level
  • You are currently taking blood thinners or certain medicines that prevent blood clotting which cannot be safely stopped before the procedure
  • You have a significant lung disease called interstitial lung disease in the area of your lung where the treatment would take place (this applies specifically to sites in the Netherlands)
  • You have confirmed cancer spread to the lymph nodes (the small glands that are part of your immune system), based on scans or other tests
  • You have previously had a procedure to remove an entire lung (pneumonectomy)
