Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Siderosis group: Adults aged 18 or older (male or female) who have been diagnosed with a condition called idiopathic superficial siderosis (iSS) — a specific neurological condition — confirmed by a specialist doctor at University College London Hospitals
  • Age-related hearing loss group: Adults aged 18 or older (male or female) who have been diagnosed with hearing loss caused by aging
  • Control group: Adults aged 18 or older (male or female) who have no history of hearing loss and no known neurological condition affecting their hearing (the trial aims to recruit people aged 50 or above for this group, but may include younger adults if needed)

Who may not be able to join:

  • Anyone under the age of 18
  • Anyone whose physical or mental health would prevent them from giving their agreement to take part, or from completing the hearing and/or balance tests involved in the study
  • Siderosis group: Anyone who has not already been formally diagnosed with iSS
  • Age-related hearing loss group: Anyone without a confirmed diagnosis of age-related hearing loss, or whose hearing loss has a different cause; also anyone with a history of exposure to very loud noise, certain medications that can harm hearing, middle ear problems, or a family history of non-age-related hearing loss
  • Control group: Anyone with any known history of hearing loss (for any reason) or any neurological condition affecting hearing; also anyone with a history of exposure to very loud noise, certain medications that can harm hearing, middle ear problems, or a family history of non-age-related hearing loss
