Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are a new patient starting home parenteral nutrition (nutrition delivered through a vein at home) through Mayo Clinic
- You are able to understand and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
- Your doctors expect you to need home parenteral nutrition for more than 3 months
- The company supplying your nutrition at home is able to provide a specific fat emulsion called Smoflipid
Who may not be able to join:
- You are under 18 years old
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are not willing or able to sign a consent form
- You have liver problems, including abnormal liver test results above a certain level, as decided by the lead researcher
- You currently have an active cancer
- Your doctors expect you to need home parenteral nutrition for less than 3 months
- You have a known history of alcohol addiction or dependence, and have been drinking heavily in the past 12 months
- You have a known allergy to fish, egg, soybean, or peanut protein, or to any ingredient in Smoflipid
- Your home parenteral nutrition will not be managed by the Mayo Clinic team
- You currently have an active infection at the time of joining the trial
- You have already received Smoflipid for more than 4 weeks in the past 12 months
- You have already been on parenteral nutrition (nutrition through a vein) for more than 4 weeks in the past 12 months
- You are already taking part in another clinical trial that involves a treatment or intervention
- You have very high levels of fats (triglycerides) in your blood, above a specific level (confirm with trial site)
