Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • The baby is currently admitted to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a participating hospital, and is between 0 and 120 days old at the time of joining the study
  • Doctors suspect the baby's illness or health problems may be caused by a genetic (inherited) condition, based on physical signs or other findings
  • The baby is able to have a small amount of blood drawn (about 1 to 1.25 ml, roughly a quarter of a teaspoon)
  • At least one parent is able to give written permission for the baby to take part
  • At least one biological parent agrees to participate and provide a small blood sample themselves (about 4 ml, roughly less than one teaspoon)

Who may not be able to join:

  • The baby's condition is already known to have a non-genetic cause
  • The baby's symptoms are fully explained by being born prematurely
  • The baby has been diagnosed with, or is strongly suspected to have, Trisomy 13, 18, 21 (Down syndrome), or Turner Syndrome — unless a chromosome test (karyotype) has come back normal
  • The baby has received a blood transfusion within the last 48 hours (though they may become eligible again 48 hours after the last transfusion)
  • The doctor leading the study decides that joining the trial is not in the baby's best interest — for example, if the baby is very seriously ill and a different, faster test might be more appropriate (confirm with trial site)

Important: Always verify eligibility with the trial site directly before applying.
