Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- African American or Latino/a young people (male or female) between the ages of 13 and 17
- Teenagers who have been feeling depressed for more than 2 weeks, but whose symptoms have not yet reached the level of a full diagnosis of major depression and do not have certain other conditions (see below)
- Parents of teenagers who are eligible for the trial
- Doctors working at one of the four Mile Square Health Centers
- Other healthcare staff working at one of the four Mile Square Health Centers
Who may not be able to join:
- Teenagers who are currently being treated for depression, including those who have taken antidepressant medication or received counseling within one year of their most recent episode of depression getting better
- Teenagers who appear to meet the full criteria for a diagnosis of major depression
- Teenagers who appear to have a problem with alcohol or drug misuse
- Teenagers who experience panic attacks
- Teenagers who appear to have generalized anxiety disorder (a condition involving excessive, ongoing worry)
- Teenagers who appear to have an eating disorder
- Teenagers who have a history of being treated for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia
- Teenagers who are considered at high risk for suicide, such as those who frequently have thoughts of suicide or have recently shown intent to harm themselves
