Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are a woman between 16 and 35 years old who has been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and are looking for a form of birth control
- Your Body Mass Index (BMI) — a measure of body weight relative to height — is above 18 and below 35
- You are willing and able to give written agreement to take part in the study
- You have finished breastfeeding (if applicable)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have metabolic conditions (problems with how your body processes energy or nutrients) that require medication, unless it is a well-controlled thyroid condition
- You have high blood pressure that is not well controlled
- You currently have cancer, or have a history of cancer that was affected by hormones
- You have a history of a liver condition called cholestasis (where bile does not flow properly)
- You have any medical reason why you should not take oral contraceptives (birth control pills) (confirm with trial site)
- You have a personal history of heart or cardiovascular problems such as a heart attack or stroke
- You take medications known to worsen how your body manages blood sugar
- You are currently taking any prescription or over-the-counter weight-loss medications
- You have diabetes
- You take medications that affect blood pressure or cholesterol levels
- You have smoked in the past 6 months
- You have a known inherited condition that increases your risk of blood clots, such as Factor V Leiden
- You have a current or past history of blood clots in your legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism)
- You have had major surgery that required a long period of limited movement
- You have used an injectable hormonal contraceptive within the past 6 months
- You are currently using hormonal birth control (such as the pill) or insulin-sensitizing medications and are not willing to stop taking them for 3 months before the study measurements begin
