Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have type 2 diabetes that is well managed (controlled) AND who have already been diagnosed with heart or blood vessel disease.
- People who have type 2 diabetes that is well managed (controlled), are over 40 years old, do not have existing heart or blood vessel disease, but do have one or more major risk factors for heart disease.
Who may not be able to join:
- People with very high blood pressure that is not under control (top number above 180 or bottom number above 95).
- People with signs of active liver disease or poor liver function (shown by certain liver test results being more than twice the normal level).
- People with heart muscle problems that are not under control (uncontrolled lack of blood supply to the heart).
- People with severe heart failure (classified as a serious level by a standard medical rating system — confirm with trial site).
- People with significant heart valve problems.
- People whose high cholesterol is caused by another medical condition.
- People with a gut or digestive condition that could affect how the body absorbs medication, or who have had part of their small intestine surgically removed.
- People with a muscle-wasting condition or severe muscle breakdown disorder.
- People who are known to be allergic or sensitive to statin medications (a common type of cholesterol-lowering drug).
- People currently taking hormonal medications, including those that affect male or female sex hormones (such as testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, or related treatments).
- People currently taking medications that suppress the immune system or thin the blood.
- People with a blood test result showing a muscle enzyme (creatine kinase) that is more than 50% above the normal upper limit.
- People who have previously had a mini-stroke or stroke.
- People with very high levels of fats (triglycerides) in the blood when fasting (350 mg/dl or above).
- People currently taking psychiatric medications, steroids, or strong painkillers (opiates).
- People with a known serious mental health condition.
- People who scored 24 or below on a standard memory and thinking test (MMSE) at the start of the study.
- People who are physically or mentally unable to complete the required tests.
- People with a history of other known risk factors for hearing loss, or who have been found to have a specific type of hearing loss (conductive hearing loss, confirmed by a hearing test).
- People with certain non-hearing-related conditions that could affect brain signal tests, such as neurological diseases or syndromes (confirm with trial site).
