NCT00459550
Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed by a doctor as probably having Alzheimer's disease (AD).
- Your Alzheimer's is considered mild, based on a standard memory and thinking test score between 18 and 26.
- You are between 55 and 80 years old.
- If you are a woman, you have gone through menopause naturally or have had surgery that means you cannot become pregnant.
- If you are a man whose partner could become pregnant or has been menopausal for less than 2 years, you are willing to use an effective form of contraception.
- You are able to complete memory and thinking tests, and you speak the language in which those tests are given.
- You live with, or spend significant time with, a caregiver who is willing to help you follow the study rules and take the study medication, and report on how you are doing.
- You are able and willing to give your full written agreement to take part before anything in the study begins.
- Your caregiver is also able and willing to give their own full written agreement to take part before anything begins.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a history of, or signs of, any other brain or nervous system condition that could also explain your memory problems.
- You currently live in a nursing home.
- You are unable to give your own informed consent because of the severity of your memory or thinking difficulties.
- Your brain scan (MRI) at the start of the study shows results that do not fit with Alzheimer's disease, signs of other brain conditions, more than minor blood vessel changes, or more than 3 small areas of bleeding in the brain.
- Your neurological (brain and nerve) examination shows unusual or abnormal findings.
- There is any medical reason why you cannot have a lumbar puncture (a procedure to collect fluid from your spine).
- You have a significant history of serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or a significant neurological condition other than Alzheimer's.
- You have had a mini-stroke or stroke in the last 3 years, have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, have active heart or cardiovascular disease, or have other uncontrolled risk factors for stroke.
- You currently use, or have recently used, alcohol or drugs in a way that could be contributing to your memory problems.
- You have a history of a significant disease where your immune system attacks your own body.
- You have a history of seizures (not including childhood febrile seizures), a current blood clotting or bleeding disorder, a serious ongoing illness, or a significant infection within the last 30 days that could affect your health during the study.
- You have a history of a condition where a protein builds up in brain blood vessels (cerebral amyloid angiopathy), bleeding in the brain related to high blood pressure, or a known increased risk of bleeding in the brain.
- You are taking certain Alzheimer's medications (cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, or selegiline) unless you have been on a stable dose for specific periods before the study and will continue that same dose throughout (confirm with trial site).
- You stopped taking certain Alzheimer's or cognition-related medications within the 60 days before the screening visit.
- You are taking any other medications that could affect memory or thinking, unless you have been on a stable dose for at least 30 days before the screening visit.
- You use blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications (except low-dose aspirin of 325 mg per day or less), anti-seizure medications, or strong painkilling (narcotic) medications.
- You regularly use or have a history of long-term use of steroid tablets or other medications that suppress the immune system.
- You have previously taken part in a clinical trial involving a type of treatment called a monoclonal antibody, or any experimental treatment for Alzheimer's or any other condition within 60 days before screening, or within a specific time period related to that medication — whichever is longer (confirm with trial site).
- You are unable to have an MRI scan for any reason, such as having a pacemaker, metal implants, artificial heart valves, other metal in your body, or severe claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces).
- You smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, or the equivalent amount of tobacco.
