Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (as defined by the National Diabetes Data Group)
- People who have a normal heart and blood vessel check-up result
- People who have not smoked for at least 1 year before joining
- Healthy volunteers with no known medical problems
- Healthy volunteers with a normal heart and blood vessel check-up result
- Healthy volunteers whose fasting blood sugar level is below 110 mg/dL
- Healthy volunteers who have not smoked for at least 1 year before joining
Who may not be able to join:
For people with type 2 diabetes:
- People with high blood pressure that is not being treated (above 140/90 mmHg)
- People with high cholesterol that is not being treated (LDL above the 75th percentile for their age)
- People who have smoked cigarettes within the past year
- People who have nerve damage that requires medication
- People who have kidney problems, including high levels of protein in the urine or high creatinine levels in the blood
- People with an abnormal heart or blood vessel check-up result
- People who have taken a type of diabetes medication called a thiazolidinedione within the past year
- Women who have gone through menopause and are taking hormone replacement therapy
- People taking ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (a type of blood pressure medication) should be aware that they may need to stop these for 2 weeks before taking the study drug (confirm with trial site)
For healthy volunteers:
- People with an abnormal heart or blood vessel check-up result
- People who are currently taking any prescription medications
- People whose fasting blood sugar level is 110 mg/dL or higher
- People who have smoked cigarettes within the past year
