Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with a type of blood disorder called thalassemia intermedia, with a hemoglobin level of 10 g/dL or lower
• You have two specific gene changes (mutations) related to beta thalassemia
• You have had your spleen removed, or your spleen cannot be felt during a physical exam
• It has been at least 3 months since your last red blood cell transfusion
• You are well enough to carry out some daily activities (a general health score of 0–2 on a standard medical scale)
• Your liver and kidneys are working normally
• Your iron levels are not severely high, and your ferritin level is below 5,000 ng/mL
• You are willing to have a small tube (vascular access) placed to allow treatment

Who may not be able to join:

• You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
• You are able to have children but are unwilling to use effective birth control during the trial
• You have severely high iron levels or a ferritin level above 5,000 ng/mL
• You have active hepatitis (liver infection or inflammation)
• You have a current viral illness or infection
• You have any condition that would make it difficult or unsafe for you to follow the trial's requirements (confirm with trial site)
