Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with a type of blood disorder called thalassemia intermedia, with a hemoglobin level of 10 g/dL or lower
- You have two specific gene changes (mutations) related to beta thalassemia
- You have had your spleen removed, or your spleen cannot be felt during a physical exam
- It has been at least 3 months since your last red blood cell transfusion
- You are well enough to carry out some daily activities (a general health score of 0–2 on a standard medical scale)
- Your liver and kidneys are working normally
- Your iron levels are not severely high, and your ferritin level is below 5,000 ng/mL
- You are willing to have a small tube (vascular access) placed to allow treatment
Who may not be able to join:
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- You are able to have children but are unwilling to use effective birth control during the trial
- You have severely high iron levels or a ferritin level above 5,000 ng/mL
- You have active hepatitis (liver infection or inflammation)
- You have a current viral illness or infection
- You have any condition that would make it difficult or unsafe for you to follow the trial's requirements (confirm with trial site)
