Completed Phase 3

Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with hypokalemic periodic paralysis (a condition where low potassium causes episodes of muscle weakness), with typical symptoms and normal thyroid hormone levels
  • You or an affected family member has had low potassium levels during a paralysis episode, either happening on its own or triggered by glucose (sugar)
  • You have periodic paralysis linked to a specific genetic change on chromosome 17, such as hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (with or without muscle stiffness) or paramyotonia congenita with periodic paralysis
  • You experience clear, regular episodes of weakness at least once a week but no more than 3 times per day

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have had your symptoms get worse after taking a type of medication called a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (confirm with trial site)
  • You have had life-threatening episodes of weakness before receiving any treatment
  • You have periodic paralysis but no confirmed genetic change on chromosome 17 (confirm with trial site)
  • You are currently taking certain medications — such as water pills (diuretics), anti-seizure drugs, heart rhythm medications, steroids, beta-blockers, or calcium, magnesium, or potassium supplements — for reasons other than periodic paralysis
  • You have liver disease
  • You have kidney failure or kidney stones
  • You have any heart disease or irregular heart rhythm
  • You have a lung condition that affects your breathing
  • You have an active thyroid condition
  • You are pregnant
