Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are being admitted to the hospital because of a sickle cell crisis
  • Your current crisis started at least 12 hours before you were admitted to the hospital
  • Your medical records showing your sickle cell disease diagnosis and at least one previous crisis that required a hospital visit in the last 24 months are available at the study location
  • Your kidney function is within an acceptable range (creatinine level no higher than 2.2 mg/dL) (confirm with trial site)
  • Your weight is within 30% of the ideal body weight for your height and build
  • You are able to communicate with the study staff in the primary language used by the team
  • You are able to read and understand pain rating scales used in the study
  • You can accurately identify when your current crisis started, within about a 6-hour window

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have a blood disorder called thalassemia, or a combination of thalassemia and sickle cell disease
  • You require regular dialysis for kidney problems
  • You have a condition called fructose intolerance (inability to process certain sugars)
  • You have insulin-dependent diabetes
  • You have tested positive for HIV, or have AIDS or an AIDS-related illness
  • You received or are scheduled to receive a general anesthetic within 7 days before or 2 days after joining the study
