Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Babies who are scheduled to have surgery and will stay in the hospital afterward
  • Babies who were born at 35 weeks of pregnancy or later
  • Babies in Part I of the study who are less than 12 months old and are having a major chest, stomach, or heart operation
  • Babies in Part II of the study who are less than 3 months old and are having a chest operation through the side of the body (thoracotomy)
  • Babies in Part II who have a type of heart condition present at birth where the heart doesn't get enough oxygen (cyanotic congenital heart disease) and need a specific type of shunt surgery, OR who are having chest surgery to fix certain heart or airway problems such as a narrowing of the main artery from the heart, a connection between the food pipe and windpipe, or a vessel near the heart that needs to be tied off
  • Babies with normal liver function
  • Babies with normal kidney function

Who may not be able to join:

  • Babies whose mothers used opioid (narcotic) pain medications during pregnancy
  • Babies in Part I who are having certain specific surgeries, including removal of a lung, reconstruction of the windpipe or airways, repair of a hole in the diaphragm, or surgery to close large openings in the abdominal wall (confirm with trial site)
  • Babies in Part I who are having a liver or kidney transplant
  • Babies who have a lung disease that causes too much carbon dioxide to build up in their blood
  • Babies who have high blood pressure in the lungs that would make a specific breathing test in this study unsafe (confirm with trial site)
  • Babies who are allergic to morphine
  • Babies who have a severe developmental condition that would make it impossible to assess their pain levels
