Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (a type of cancer) confirmed by a tissue test (biopsy)
  • Your cancer has not responded to standard treatments for local disease, or to systemic (whole-body) treatments for cancer that has spread, or you have chosen not to pursue other systemic treatments
  • Your cancer is located in one of several possible areas, including the cervix, head and neck, skin, esophagus, lung, or penis (other sites may also be eligible — confirm with trial site)
  • Your cancer can be measured or detected, either through a physical exam or imaging scans like X-ray, CT, or MRI
  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You are reasonably well and able to carry out daily activities (not severely limited by your illness)
  • Your blood cell counts, liver function, and kidney function are within acceptable ranges (confirmed by blood tests)
  • If you previously had brain metastases (cancer spread to the brain), they have already been treated and responded to that treatment

Who may not be able to join:

  • You currently have active cancer in the brain that is not being controlled
  • You have had a heart attack within the last 6 months
  • You have heart failure that requires medication
  • You have an irregular heartbeat that requires medication
  • You need supplemental oxygen or feel short of breath while at rest
  • You have a long-term condition that weakens your immune system
  • You are HIV positive
  • You are pregnant (a pregnancy test will be required), or you are able to have children and are not using adequate birth control
  • You are currently taking immunosuppressive drugs (medicines that suppress your immune system), such as cyclosporin
  • You are currently taking corticosteroids (a type of anti-inflammatory medication)
  • You have had chemotherapy within the last 3 weeks and have not yet recovered from its side effects
  • The area of your cancer being measured for the trial was previously treated with radiation, unless it can be shown that the cancer has continued to grow or spread there
